One acre of sugar cane can produce 10,000 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power the average Florida home for 10 months. The amount of urban wood waste the company recycles as clean energy conserves more than 3.5 million cubic yards of valuable landfill space each year. For more than 35 years, Heritage Environmental Services of Indianapolis, Indiana has been providing safe and compliant waste services while developing true sustainable solutions for companies with waste problems. The company uses 25% of its annual profits for R&D and is the only waste services company that does continuous research on how to reuse hazardous waste to make viable new products.

PROCTER & GAMBLE

WORLD BANK/GLOBAL GAS FLARING REDUCTION PARTNERSHIP

It is estimated that about 140 billion cubic meters of natural gas are flared and vented annually at oil fields across the world. Natural gas is released when oil is produced, but is often difficult and expensive to use, especially in countries that lack sufficient regulations, infrastructure and markets. GMTV will highlight the partnership of the World Bank with oil producing countries and governmental and private oil companies throughout the world to form the Global Gas Flaring Reduction partnership (GGFR) with the aim of dramatically reducing the environmentally harmful and costly burn-off of natural as a by-product of oil production.

COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY

For the past six years, CSU has been in the top 10 in Recyclemania, the nationwide recycling challenge that more than 500 higher education institutions entered, but the university’s sustainability commitment is much more than a campus commitment to light bulbs and recycling. Sustainability is a key component in how the school goes about its land grant mission of teaching, research and service to the community. CSU’s recently established School of Global Environmental Sustainability is an umbrella organization that encompasses all environmental education and research at the university.

VERIZON

Verizon has always been known as the company with The Network.” Today, Verizon is at the forefront of alleviating climate change. As a leader in energy efficiency, Verizon has invested billions of dollars in developing high-speed, fiber-optic and wireless communication networks that are fast and versatile and offer solutions to big social issues like health care, education and climate change. ALCOA

For as long as Alcoa has been making aluminum, the company has been recycling aluminum. In fact, 73% of all the aluminum produced since 1888 is still in use today. Recycled aluminum is identical to smelted aluminum except for one thing: It takes only 5% of the energy to make it. Less energy means reduced greenhouse emissions. And like few other materials in the recycling chain, aluminum is infinitely recyclable for use over and over again. Because recycling aluminum saves so much energy, increasing America’s aluminum recycling from today’s 54% to 75% is a huge opportunity for American consumers to reduce their carbon footprint and rank the country among the top recycling countries in the world.

NAVISTAR

Recently, Navistar was awarded a $39 million U.S. Department of Energy grant to deploy all-electric vehicles. Through this grant Navistar plans to build 400 zero-tail-pipe-emission all-electric vehicles in 2010 and expects to be producing several thousand vehicles annually within a couple of years.

The $10 million dollar Progressive Automobile X Prize competition is bringing together some of the most innovative minds in the world in a share effort to break America’s addiction to oil.
